Language Arts
We are three quarters of the way through our novels. The 5th grade is covering the American Revolution and reading My Brother Sam is Dead; 6th  grade is reading A House Divided The Civil War Adventure; 7th and 8th are reading The Slopes of War A Novel of  Gettysburg. Each grade level will have a novel assigned to them.

Comprehension questions will be given daily and unit tests at the end of specific chapters.

Spelling and vocabulary will relate to each novel.

Each student is working on a time period appropriate character and a journal/diary recording his/her experiences in the war. If the student does not finish his/her journal entry in class during the time given to them they need to take it home.

Journal 1 – Introduce yourself – name; age; where you live; your family; which side of the war you are on; your opinion on the war.

Journal 2 – Description of you campsite; weather conditions; troops conditions; your state of mind.

Journal 3 – A day in the life of you as a soldier – from wake up call to bedtime – everything in between; day at battle – if you have entered one.

Journal Entry 4 – Traveling to the next battle site/camp site – what things do you see – who do you run into – where do you get your supplies- how are and what are you eating – how are you feeling – how are the troops doing – how does your commander treat your troop.

Journal 5 – You have been captured by the opposite side – how did it happen – what do you feel – what are you going to do – make a plan to escape.

Journal Entry 6 – You escaped or have been converted to the side that has captured you – Explain how this happened – now what will you do – where do you go – do you give up and fight for the opposite side – be creative – add anything else you can think of.

Journal 7 – Write a friendly letter to someone – mom, dad, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, brother, sister, etc.

Tell how you are doing – tell about your capture and escape – tell about a small skirmish/battle you have been in – add anything else you deem appropriate.

Journal 8 – You have to run a special secret errand for your commander – it is important letters, regarding battle formation, locations and tactics – what, where, how, when, how do you do this without getting caught – be creative on your descriptions.

Journal 9 – free write
