Language Arts
We are
three quarters of the way through our novels. The 5th
grade is covering the American Revolution and reading My Brother Sam
is Dead; 6th
grade is reading A House Divided The Civil War Adventure; 7th
and 8th are reading The Slopes of War A Novel of
Gettysburg. Each grade level will have a novel assigned to
them.
Comprehension questions will be given daily and unit tests at the end of specific chapters.
Spelling and vocabulary will relate to each novel.
Each
student is working on a time period appropriate character and a
journal/diary recording his/her experiences in the war. If the
student does not finish his/her journal entry in class during the
time given to them they need to take it home.
Journal 1 – Introduce yourself – name; age; where you live; your
family; which side of the war you are on; your opinion on the war.
Journal 2 – Description of you campsite; weather conditions; troops
conditions; your state of mind.
Journal 3 – A day in the life of you as a soldier – from wake up
call to bedtime – everything in between; day at battle – if you have
entered one.
Journal Entry 4 – Traveling to the next battle site/camp site – what
things do you see – who do you run into – where do you get your
supplies- how are and what are you eating – how are you feeling –
how are the troops doing – how does your commander treat your troop.
Journal 5 – You have been captured by the opposite side – how did it
happen – what do you feel – what are you going to do – make a plan
to escape.
Journal Entry 6 – You escaped or have been converted to the side
that has captured you – Explain how this happened – now what will
you do – where do you go – do you give up and fight for the opposite
side – be creative – add anything else you can think of.
Journal 7 – Write a friendly letter to someone – mom, dad,
girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, brother, sister, etc.
Tell how you are doing – tell about your capture and escape – tell
about a small skirmish/battle you have been in – add anything else
you deem appropriate.
Journal 8 – You have to run a special secret errand for your
commander – it is important letters, regarding battle formation,
locations and tactics – what, where, how, when, how do you do this
without getting caught – be creative on your descriptions.
Journal 9 – free write
We
are working on expository – persuasive – narrative – and descriptive
writing prompts during homeroom time.
We
are working in our Buckle Down AIMS review books; books should not
come home unless they did not finish the daily assignment.
Late work will not be accepted for the remaining two quarters; all
work must be complete and turned in on time.
Field Trip to the theater Thursday, February 9th, leaving
at 8:35 am.
Renaissance Fair permission slips go home on Monday, February 6th,
need to be returned with money for both student and chaperones no
later than Friday, February 10th. We need parent drivers.
We will be leaving the school no later than 8:15 am – all students and chaperones are requested to be here by 8:00 am.
